May Update On Mr.Welsh's classes...
Sorry it has been a while since I have had a chance to post but things have been so busy! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, you may reach me at twelsh@plymouth.k12.ma.us and I will get back to you immediately. Here are some quick updates as to what is occurring in my classes.
World History-- We have recently studied the Roman Republic and the Middle Ages. We learned about the greatness of Rome and why it eventually fell. We also learned about the barbarian invasions and the introduction of feudalism, the importance of the church and the impact of the bubonic plague. Students continue to demonstrate knowledge in oral classroom discussions, reading comprehensions, video clip responses, quizzes and writing prompts.
Pre-Voc- Students start the class by completing a couple of the several jobs that they rotate through such as washing dishes, using the dishwasher, running the washing machine, cleaning windows, sweeping floors or cleaning an in class bathroom. After this there are a couple of activities that vary day to day. Students recently completed a unit on following a basic recipe. They made fruit smoothies, toast and jam and microwave smores. We have also been learning about survival signs and students were asked to identify examples in a game played in class, and by walking around the building outside. We have also worked on budgeting money using money manipulatives, writing checks, filling out deposit slips, reading menus, calling businesses for information and filling out personal information forms. Recently we also did some mock interviews where each student interviewed for a hypothetical job, we videotaped it and then gave each other constructive criticism.
Social Skills- We recently finished watching "The Pursuit of Happiness" starring Will Smith. Afterwards the kids had to create slides presentations identifying what makes them happy and the things that they will need to accomplish in order to be happy as an adult.
Algebra I- Students have been working on a unit on finding slope given a line on a graph or two coordinate points. Students have had to learn how to follow a formula to do this and overall the class is making progress. I give periodic quizzes and reinforce basic math skills using the Symphony Math program.
Algebra II- We have recently completed units on multiplying binomials and adding or subtracting polynomials. We also occasionally work on functional math concepts such as making tips, paying bills, calculating sales tax and making change. I give periodic quizzes. The latest unit the kids have started involves finding percentages.
Biology- We have recently completed a unit on genetics. Students learned how to use Punnet Squares in order to determine how traits are passed down in various scenarios. Students complete reading comprehensions, watch and respond to video clips, take guided notes and participate in classroom discussions every time we meet. The kids are also asked to demonstrate knowledge through Slides presentations and standard quizzes.
