Hello All, Here is a quick update on Mr. Welsh's classes: World History- We are continuing to study Ancient Egypt. Students watched a documentary of the discovery of King Tut's tomb and have been learning about Cleopatra, Egyptian social classes, hieroglyphics, primary and secondary sources and have been answering document based questions. The final assessment for this unit will be a Powerpoint presentation that students will begin working on next period. Pre-Vocational Skills: In this class the kids are continuing to perform their job tasks at the beginning of each period. We also worked on following recipes by making smoothies again as well. Recent classroom lessons have included budgeting using money manipulatives and discussing customer service. The kids will begin role playing customer service scenarios next week. We had a great turn out at the Homecoming Dance this weekend! I wasn't able to get a group picture because it was tough to find them all but here are a few action shots! Welcome To Open House Night 2017! A1 : Strategic Reading So far this school year we have worked on parts of speech, functional vocabulary, brainstorming ideas for writing, proper sentence and paragraph structure & reading comprehension. We will continue to focus on "real life" writing and reading goals which are individualized for each student based upon their IEP goals. A2: Social Skills (1) So far this school year we have focused on basic conversation skills (ie; formal vs informal greetings, initiating questions, responding to greetings and questions, etc.). We will continue to work on these skills along with maintaining a conversation, asking follow-up questions and more. This group will start to go out into the community next month which will be a big part of how we structure our class as we will continue to increase many aspects of their own independence, self-advocacy skills and confidence. Update on Mr. Welsh's Classes Greetings! School has already been in session for over a month and things are going full tilt ahead in the autism program at PSHS. The following serves as an update for Mr. Welsh's classes within the program. Students made social pyramids out of construction paper to demonstrate knowledge that Hindu society has a rigid social structure. They have also enjoyed learning about the pyramids and Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. They have learned material through interactive discussions, classroom videos, reading comprehensions and vocabulary development.
