Quick Update on Mr. Welsh's classes
World History- We have finished up our unit on Greece and are now studying Ancient Rome. Students recently completed a Slides Presentation on Greek mythology before reviewing for and taking their midterm exams. While studying Greece, they also learned about the differences between the two major city states, Athens and Sparta, and studied the Persian Wars.
Pre-Voc- Students continue to rotate through daily jobs which include shredding, laundry, dishes, washing windows, and tasks related to the general upkeep of the room. Recent classwork has included identifying safe and unsafe scenarios, filling out personal information forms, writing checks and calling businesses to request information.
Social Skills- We have been studying substance abuse and the effects it has on relationships. Students are in the midst of completing their final project on this unit which entails researching various commonly abused substances and creating an informational pamphlet on why they are abused, the effects that they have on the body, and how teenager can say no to peer pressure.
Algebra 1- Students have recently been working on solving equations that contain like terms, solving equations that have fractions and the distributive property. Concepts are modeled at the board and then students practice with 1:1 assistance from staff. The program Symphony Math is used to sure up basic math skills as they are essential to progressing in the Algebra curriculum.
Algebra 2: We recently completed a unit on graphing linear equations. Currently we are working on multiplying and dividing terms with exponents. In order to break up the instruction in class I will occasionally have students complete life skills math assignments such as managing a budget or paying bills.
Biology: The class has completed the unit on cell division and is now moving into a unit on organic molecules. Students will be learning about carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids and how they are essential to carrying out life functions.
